Mellitus Nyongesa Wanyama is currently a Professor of Ethnomusicology/Musicology at Kabarak University in Kenya where since August 2015 he has served as the Founding Dean, School of Music and Performing Arts. During the 2017 PASMAE conference in Mbabane, Swaziland, he was voted in as President-Elect of PASMAE.
Prior to moving to Kabarak University, Wanyama taught for over 10 years undergraduate Music and Dance courses in the Department of Literature, Theatre and Film Studies at Moi University, where he was the founder of Music studies. He was also the Chairman of the Panel that drafted Music courses for the new School of Music and Performing Arts at Kabarak University.
A music educator, composer, arranger, choral trainer, dance choreographer and adjudicator of music and dance, Mellitus is the Founder and Executive Director of Utafiti Foundation Publishers – a Research and Documentation Centre – where he is the Chief Editor www.utafitifoundation.com. He is also Editor-in-Chief of African Musicology Online www.africanmusicology.com.
Wanyama holds a Certificate in Education (Mosoriot Teachers College), Diploma in Education (Kisii College), BA and MPhil degrees (Moi University) and a doctorate in ethnomusicology from the University of Pretoria, South Africa.
